Home safety information
A new home should be safe for the kitten. Don't forget that little Scottish fold kittens are very curious, therefore make sure that dangerous objects and substances are safely hidden. Here are some tips:
Remove the hanging wires. A kitten can start playing with wire and knock over something heavy, such as iron, lamp or laptop.
Keep the kitten away from hot objects, such as hot iron or electric stove, hair curler, dishes with hot contents.
Ensure that all tubes, vials, and bottles of household chemicals are closed. We require that only natural, organic, not toxic household cleaners, detergents, dish soaps be used on any surface of dishes the cat may come into contact with.
Do not leave the kitten unattended while windows or balconies are opened. The kittens have a poorly developed instinct for self-preservation and there is no fear of heights, so it can easily fall. Also, do not leave the kitten on high objects, such as a table or shelf. The musculoskeletal system of the kitten is weaker than that of an adult animal, so if it falls or jumps from too high, it can damage the joint or bone.
Remove all small objects that kitten can swallow. Also, kittens love to play with thread and may occasionally eat it. It's not dangerous unless it was a thread with a needle, so be careful with that.
Opening and closing doors can injure the kitten. Buy a special door stopper or door closer to avoid the slam of the door.
Not all indoor plants are safe for cats. If you own a mini-garden at your home, talk with your veterinarian to figure out if the kitten may be poisoned from any plant you have.
Litter training
Our kittens are litter trained. Typically, kittens take an example from their mother and repeat her behavior. After moving to a new house kitten is guided by the smell, therefore it's very important to have the same filler that he knows since cattery. We use Wheat Scoop Multi-Cat Natural Wheat Cat Litter, so better you buy the same one at least for the first time. Sometimes kittens like to lick the litter for some reason, but it's absolutely safe. This litter is made from wheat, so there is no dust and chemicals. Also, it's flushable.
When you bring a kitten to a new place it's better to keep it in a small room with water, food, a litter box, and a comfortable sleeping bed or cat tree. The litter box should be wide enough, we recommend covered litter box so the kitten will make less mess. The sides of the litter box should be low so that the kitten can climb into it and get out when he's done. Place the litter box in a quiet place where the kitten can retire and feel safe. Don't place it near loud appliances such as a fridge or washing machine. Also, cats don't eat near the litter box, so make sure you place food and water far enough. If you have several cats, each one should have a personal litter box.
After kitten left his waste, remove a lump of filler using a spatula and then fill it with a fresh one. Litter trained kittens will not bother you if their litter box is accessible and clean.
Scottish fold kittens diet
The digestive system of cats is different from the human, so kittens need a special diet. No human food or milk, please! We sell kittens after the breastfeeding is over, so they shouldn't get any lactose with the food.
Kitten's diet must be made up of a quality canned and dry food from our list of recommended brands. We use dry food for mother and babies, then we use for kittens under 3 months Royal Canin Mother & Babycat Ultra Soft Mousse Canned Cat Food, 3 oz. After the kitten gets 4 months old, switch it to Royal Canin Kitten Instinctive Thin Slices in Gravy Canned Cat Food, 3-oz. We recommend to feed kittens 2-3 times a day, one can is enough. After kitten reaches 1 year old you can fully switch to adult cat food.
Dry food is good for teeth, but it's important to mix it with wet food because they digest it well and absorb all the nutrients. Water should be always provided in glass or stainless steel dish at room temperature. Use fresh filtered water for your pet. Remember, that the greater the ratio of dry food, the more water the cat will drink. Make sure you provide enough water.
Wash the food bowl after the kitten has eaten food so that there are no leftovers. Food for cats should always be fresh.
Also when kittens change the environment some of them may have a wet stool, it's because of the stress. We recommend to add to the meal probiotic, you can sprinkle it over the wet food. We use FortiFlora.
Keep stress level down
Moving to a new home might be stressful for the kitten, so the New Owner is responsible to reduce the stress factors as much as possible. The adoption should be very gentle. When you bring a kitten home show him where the food, water, and litter box are. First 2-3 days kitten may look a bit sad, don't worry, he will get used to a new place within a week. Give him more attention, pet him, play, call by name. If the kitten is a little scared and hides, do not force him to communicate, better let him sit for a bit. Believe it, the kitten will quickly calm down and begin to show curiosity.
Remember that the kitten, although thoroughbred, is still a baby. Even nurtured kittens can sometimes get dirty - they are in a new house and do not know the rules yet. Never yell at the kitten, and especially never hit the little one. Be patient, all children require attention and care.
New Owner should introduce a kitten to family & friends slowly in order to keep the stress level down. If the kitten is going to a multi-pet home New Owner agrees not to expose kitten to any animals until Cat is examined by a licensed vet. If the buyer fails to quarantine the cat as described above, all guarantees are null & void. After the quarantine, New Owner should gradually familiarize animals to each other. At first, the kitten should have a secure space where adult animals can't come. After a while kitten will begin to show interest in the territory of other pets. At this point, they need to be introduced correctly. Do not leave adult animals alone with a kitten. Pay attention to an adult cat and give her a treat in the presence of a kitten, so she will not be jealous and will not want to drive kitten out of her territory. Scottish fold cats are very friendly, so animals will become friends for sure.
Scottish fold kittens are sold as indoor cats only
Scottish fold cats were bred to live indoor. They require special attention and playing to provide adequate physical activity and satisfy their "natural instincts", which, by the way, are much lower than that of street cats. To make kitten happy and not let him feel lonely or bored, devote to it at least 20 minutes twice a day for communication, petting, and games. However, we bet you will want more and of course the kitten will be pleased.
Indoor cats enjoy fresh air, but they are satisfied with an open window. Scottish fold cats love to stretch out in the sun and observe what's going on outside. Make sure that the cat is safe: don't open window too wide, make a special shelve to widen the windowsill. And remember, if the cat likes to look out the window, it does not mean a desire to go out. For an indoor cat, it is entertainment similar to watching TV.
Indoor cats are much more in safe than street animals. If the cat is allowed to go outside the house, the risk of injury, poisoning or car accident is high. Scottish fold kittens are very friendly and can be stolen or abused by strangers. The average life span of an indoor cat is 12–20 years, and that of a street cat is only 1–5 years. Therefore, Scottish fold kittens and cats should live only at home!
Spaying or neutering is required
Our kittens are sold as pets and not for breeding, so they must be spayed or neutered by 7 months of age. There is a list of reasons why you should spay/neuter your kitten. By the age of 7-8 months the kitten reaches puberty, his body starts to produce hormones and breeding instinct-related behavior appears. That means that your cat will try to find or attract the mate meanwhile delivers a lot of inconvenience to the owner. It's easy to avoid such behavior if spay or neuter kitten before puberty. At the same time, spay/neuter shouldn't be done too early because it may cause developmental delays. This is why we don't do that while the kitten is in the cattery.
But the main reason to spay/neuter the cat is to protect them from some serious health problems later in life. For example, the surgery radically reduces the risk of uterine infections and breast cancer in females and prostatic hyperplasia and testicular cancer in males.
Remember that cats are driven by hormones, not by emotions, so they not gonna get a melancholy due to the inability to have kittens. After spay/neuter both the owner and a cat will have a better and calmer life.
We require New Owner to send us proof of spaying/neutering when it gets done, otherwise, a fee of the double price of the kitten will apply. You can get more details about the procedure of spaying/neutering from your veterinarian.
No Pet Shops or any type of research facility
Scottish fold kittens/cats from Valpets shall never be placed into, sold or given away to any pet shop or any type of research facility. Sometimes one of a family member may have an allergic reaction or a new family member appears, and the New Owner no longer can take care of the kitten or cat. We're sorry, but we care about every cat adopted from Valpets. Scottish fold breed is very kind and sensitive, pets strongly attached to their owners, so separation will be stressful. Getting into a Pet store or research facility can cause irreparable harm to the psyche of a cat. If under certain circumstances New Owner no longer willing or able to keep this cat/kitten, it is required to contact the breeder and return the cat. In our cattery, we will provide the necessary care for the kitten/cat to make him happy again.
New Owner should never give or sell the cat or kitten without prior agreement with the breeder.
Shipping cost and vet expenses in case of returning kitten/cat are the sole responsibility of the New Owner and no refund.
Flea control
Even if you sure that your cat never leaves home and doesn't contact other animals, you must periodically use a flea treatment. While pet stays indoor, the owner may accidentally bring a flea on shoes or clothes. Moreover, fleas can jump very high and cover long distances and may get into your house through the door.
Don't think that if the cat does not itch, then there are no fleas. Сonsidering that Scottish fold cats are very fluffy, there is almost no chance for you to notice fleas even with a close look. But fleas will cause huge stress for the cat. Flea bites are painful and can harm not only its physical condition due to constant itching and wounds, but also literally drive your cat crazy.
This is why flea control is very important! We recommend Advantage II Flea Treatment for Kittens 2-5 lbs. This highly-effective, veterinarian-recommended treatment is specifically formulated to kill all life stages of fleas on contact with no painful biting required. With three-way protection that kills the eggs, larvae, and adults, it breaks the flea life-cycle to help prevent the re-infestation of your pet and your home. The waterproof formula continues working for up to four weeks, even after bathing. This flea treatment can be used on kittens and cats 8 weeks or older.
